What is Commodity Jurisdiction and Why Do I Need It?

Dynamic Trade Group LLC

Sometimes, a company can seem uncertain about whether or not their export falls within ITAR or EAR. Usually, these items are or had defense applications. There is an option for many companies in determining whether the commodity falls within which export licensing authority – commodity jurisdiction.

We understand the complexities of CJs and would love to help your team best understand the process.

What is a Commodity Jurisdiction?

A commodity jurisdiction (CJ) request is a written request to have the U.S. government evaluate your product or service used to determine whether an item or service is subject to the export licensing authority of the Department of Commerce (EAR) or the Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (ITAR).

A CJ request determines whether a service or item falls under the authority of the following agencies:

  • Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security

  • Department of State, Directorate of Defence Trade Controls
